Eric,
There is no requirement that a public servant quit their post prior
to campaigning for another post. Or for re-election either. That's
why Kerry returned to the Senate after his presidential campaign.
If the job of mayor runs through 2007, Reiling will be mayor through
2007, unless something causes him to quit. I believe that he would
be required to quit to accept a job in the legislature or the
judiciary. I am unsure if he would need to quit if he became a Metro
Counselor or County Commissioner, since all share the executive/
legislative function. Hon. Mike O'Brien would be the expert on this
sort of question.
