Just my two cents worth:

Had it not been for the horror of the holocaust and the plight of surviving
Jews after WWIII -- which understandably gained the sympathy of the world --
the U.N. might not have given Jewish refugees and immigrants to Palestine
permission to form their own state. So I blame Hitler. His bloody legacy lives
on.

Oil? Americans will continue to guzzle it until they can't afford it at
all, which may or may not be after the "Hubbard Peak" is reached and the
resources are no longer there.

Wars begin essentially for territorial or economic reasons, or as power
quests (and most often a combination of all three) and self-defensive measures
too often go often beyond self-protection and become motivated by revenge and
hatred. Religious extremism motivates the masses to join the cause and
sacrifice themselves, believing that they are on God's side. And David, I agree
with you that our species seemed to have made precious little progress since we
first banded into prehistoric tribes.

Meanwhile, the government of China, where only 2% of dogs are vaccinated
against rabies, has reacted to a rabies outbreak (more than 200 people died) by
clubbing to death 50,000 dogs -- even those being walked by their owners or
in the homes of their owners.

The question is: will the human race ever become truly civilized?

Joy
