Joy, I sure know what you mean about finding
affordable property. And no, it's not simple!
Don't have any advice about home builders to
avoid -- I've never built from scratch -- so
hope you hear from those who have, or those
who even have second-hand knowledge ...
Maybe go back to Sperling's (this page is a
good place to start:
http://www.bestplaces.net/find/state.aspx?state=OR )
for checking out crime rates, etc.
Right now, I'm not a good person to ask about
crime: We are a family of six, and in the last
five weeks, four of the six of us (all adults) have
had crime damage to our vehicles ... 2 were just
tire damage, in F.G.; the other 2 -- one in
Hillsboro, one in Beaverton -- broken into and
damaged. The two in our family who <knock wood!>
haven't had crime damage to their vehicles don't
live in Oregon (1 in WA; 1 in CA)! So, I do know
it can happen anywhere in our state, and knew it
before our own events.
