BICYCLE HELMET SAFETY
It's great to see the number kids on bicycles having fun and getting
some exercise. But it's shocking how many youngsters are not wearing
protective helmets. Bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce the
likelihood that collisions and falls will result in serious head
injuries and death.
Olson's Bicycles is addressing this problem. On Saturday, May 13th
from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Olson's is sponsoring a sale and clinic
where bike helmets can be purchased for only $6. Expert technicians
will custom fit the helmets. Olson's is located at the corner of Elm
Street and 19th Avenue.
Here are some important bike helmet safety tips:
You must replace the helmet after any crash where your head hits. The
EPS foam is made to absorb a single impact. Even if your helmet has
not been in a crash, it should be replaced every two years. Helmet
manufactures say the materials used to make the helmet can
deteriorate over time; EPS gets dry and may crack and crumble. One of
the most common problems is the hard plastic shell suffering heat
damage. If this is affecting your helmet you will see the shell has
shrunk and the foam under the shell is exposed.
It's very important that your child always wears a helmet when
participating in all wheeled sports, even while riding a tricycle or
a bike with training wheels. It's never too early to get your child
in the helmet habit. Indeed, Oregon law requires youth age 15 years
and younger to wear protective headgear when riding a bicycle,
scooter, or skateboard, wearing roller skates or in-line roller blades.
Parents, be a positive role model - and protect yourself - by always
wearing a helmet when you ride.
Have fun and safe summer. Wear a helmet.
