While I have to admit that I have not ever taught a year of third grade, I am reasonably sure that it is not a third grade task to
know where every state in the union is located. That seems more typical of 5th grade material.
Of course, Katie is right and there is more to learn now...and so things get pushed "down" sometimes. On the other hand, no one told kids' brains that they have to master something that their young brains just are not ready for (as a group...there's always one who can do whatever we think might be impossible...but that's a different issue.)
I saw nothing but the "move the states" game...and after half-a-dozen tries I would think we'd all come close at least. But poor little third graders can't even read some of those unfamiliar names. 8-)
