[Grovenet] A Thanksgiving Thought

One of the things I've been very thankful for is that although I served in
our Armed Forces I was never called upon to serve in combat, and most
especially I was never called upon to serve in combat in a conflict as
contentious as Vietnam or as Iraq is turning out to be.
Accordingly I am especially thankful that we have soldiers who are willing
to do their duty and serve their country even if their own conscience tells
them this is an ill-lead and ill-advised war that is hamstrung with
limitations that make achieving the goals virtually impossible.
We have over 100,000 soldiers doing just that. Not every one of them is
"gung ho". Some have broken under the strain. Others were probably broken
before they arrived in Iraq. That's what happens when we give ordinary
people guns and tell them to try to stay alive while pursuing objectives
they can neither understand or achieve.
Others are struggling to make a positive difference achieving our country's
goals, no matter how absurd they may seem, and many are struggling to make a
positive difference for the people of Iraq, no matter how impossible that
may seem.
I am thankful for each and every one of those heroes.
And with that thought I respectfully offer the attached observation by
Trudeau about how not just our youth, but how more and more of the civilian
adults are reacting to the situation.
After all, our kids are mirrors of our adult attitudes, no matter how much
we'd like to think it wasn't so.
