Defamation, sometimes called "defamation of character", is spoken or  
written words that falsely and negatively reflect on a living  
person's reputation.

"Falsely and negatively"

When the President sends American soldiers, sailors and aviators to  
invade Iraq.  That is fact.  When it results in the death of 2777  
Americans  that is fact.  Those facts reflect negatively on the  
President, but they are not false.

Vice President Cheney met with in private with the Energy industry to  
craft American energy policy.  That is fact and it reflects  
negatively on the Vice President.

Commenting on those sort of things is not defamation.

Your e-mail was false, and it meets the definition of defamation.
