[Grovenet] Humor on Grovenet

Yep, those ARE funny!!

And, to me, they underscore a serious issue as well.

We do expect good speaking (and writing) ability in other people whom we
might trust with significant responsibilities. Surely the President ranks
high among those. We're right not to trust those who can't communicate
clearly.

On the other hand, people are often seduced by inspiring, moving rhetoric
that speaks to their hearts but which might hide a darker meaning. In short,
we often say "If it sounds good it must be good."

Who of my generation doesn't remember the solemn words of Winston Churchill
who, confirming that the allied forces had finally scored a clear victory
over the Rommel's Afrika Corps, warned the British people there was a long
fight ahead saying, "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning
of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

We can admire the beauty of a skilled orator's words just as we can wince,
and sometimes laugh, at the clumsy mistakes others make. But we must never
let either extreme blind us so we forget to look at the meaning behind the
words. I remember wearing army combat fatigues, steel helmet, and cradling
my M1 rife while listening to those famous moving words of JFK's, "...ask
not what your country can do for you: Ask what you can do for your country."
I was thinking, "...just what else does he expect?" I had no idea that the
"assistance" we were providing the insurgency in Vietnam would blossom into
one of the most horrific wars and one of the most horrific defeats in our
history.

When President Bush bumbles through statements like those below I have to
chuckle. But when I listen for the meaning behind his words, I find either
things that are absurd and obviously not true or, often, things that are
scary in their extremism.

Someone has accused G-Nuts of not having a sense of humor...this over the
Hillary posting fiasco.

Why bother with lies when you can have the real thing?

To wit, from our 43rd president, in all of his intellectual glory:

10) "Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream."
-LaCrosse, Wis., Oct. 18, 2000 (Listen to audio clip)

9) "I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family." -Greater
Nashua, N.H., Jan. 27, 2000(Listen to audio clip)

8) "I hear there's rumors on the Internets that we're going to have a
draft." -second presidential debate, St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 8, 2004 (Listen to
audio clip)

7) "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully." -Saginaw,
Mich., Sept. 29, 2000 (Listen to audio clip)

6) "You work three jobs? ... Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is
fantastic that you're doing that." -to a divorced mother of three, Omaha,
Nebraska, Feb.

5) "Too many good docs are getting out of the business. Too many OB-GYNs
aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country."
-Poplar Bluff, Mo., Sept. 6, 2004 (Watch video clip; listen to audio
clip)

4) "They misunderestimated me." -Bentonville, Ark., Nov. 6, 2000

3) "Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?" -Florence,
S.C., Jan. 11, 2000

2) "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never
stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither
do we." -Washington, D.C., Aug. 5, 2004 (Watch video clip; listen to audio
clip)

1) "There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in
Tennessee - that says, fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me
- you can't get fooled again." -Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002 (Watch
video clip; listen to audio clip)
