It is my understanding that the motive force for the Centro Cultural
in Cornelius was a small group of former migrants with Mexican
ancestry. One, Emilio Hernandez had worked at Tektronix for years
before starting the "Azteca" restaurant in Cornelius. He had come to
Oregon as a migrant worker earlier and stayed here to raise his family.
Emilio's sister Alicia Hernandez married Manuel Martinez, who was
another founder.
They both came to Oregon as migrant laborers prior to settling in
Washington county to raise their families. Which might make you
expect that they were foreign nationals. Not quite. Both were born
in McAllen, Texas of immigrant parents. Both married women born in
McAllen, Texas. Both served in the United States Army in the 1940's
on the German front and the German occupation. Other members of
their families served as well. Lupe Hernandez served in the
Philippines in WWII. Pele Hernandez served in WWII, Korea, and
Vietnam. Autro Hernandez served four years with the Marines and 16
years with the Air Force.
What kind of people built Centro-Cultural?
Former "migrants" who were pursuing the American Dream, who were also
Patriotic Americans, who were also members of "the Greatest Generation"
What is strange is that some people have a problem with that. They
want to believe that everyone associated with Centro is an illegal
alien.
How do I know this? Wikipedia? No. I did the research while
preparing my granddaughter's family tree. She is part of the fourth
generation of native born Americans in that family.
