[Grovenet] An Interesting Proposal on Immigration

I don't know about Mexico, but many countries forbid their citizens to serve
in the armed forces of a foreign nation.

Talk about a conflict of interest if the two nations should find themselves
at war with each other!

Still, I think it's a good idea. As long as we require a military, serving
ought to be a requirement of full citizenship, whether one was born here or
not.

I stopped after these three articles but there were many more to look at
when I did a google search.

Posthumous citizenship awarded to a soldier fighting for the US in Iraq.
(Diego Rincon was his name)

Army Reserve Spc. Kendell K. Frederick was stationed in Iraq when he decided

he wanted to become a citizen of the country he was serving

Across Iraq, I keep running across American troops who are not Americans.
Many of these soldiers and Marines are working towards attaining U.S.
citizenship while in uniform, under fire, in Iraq. I was privileged to
witness the award ceremony for 12 new American citizens in Deuce Four
recently. http://www.michaelyon-online.com/wp/welcome-aboard.htm/

Somewhere in the back of my mind I recall seeing one also where the soldier
in Iraq was trying to do just that and he was denied citizenship for some
technical reason and his congressman or family or somebody was trying to get

it corrected so he could become a citizen.
I don't personally believe that the saying 'immigrants do the job that
American's won't do' is the whole story but I do know that the military is
still having a heck of a time recruiting soldiers. If there was an option
for immigrants to become citizens by serving in the military my guess is
that they would line up at the edge of the border fence and they would
gladly take their chances in Iraq for citizenship in return. Alternatively
if Bush wanted to require that they leave the country first and line up for
military jobs they would likely do that too.
The only down side to this scheme might be that it would be so successful,
Bush would take advantage of our swelling military ranks and have no
hesitation to invade Iran before he leaves office.
