The difference is that the Republicans have a President in office who can do
the explaining from a national pulpit.
President Bush reminds me of a story I heard years ago about an ambitious
up-and-coming young executive who wanted his boss' job, so he launched an
under-the-table campaign to replace him.
On the day his boss was finally fired, the boss grabbed the youngster and
led him aside. "Look," he said. "No hard feelings. In fact, I've left some
important advice for you in my desk. Just dig it out when you feel you need
it!"
"Yeah, right..." the young exec thought, and stalked off.
Some months later the young exec found himself in deep trouble as all his
fancy plans were failing to produce results. He was facing a meeting with
the board of directors and dreading it, wondering what to say, when he
remembered what his old boss had told him. He dug out two envelopes his boss
had left behind in his desk, marked "open this first" and "open this next".
In the first envelope was small slip of paper that said, "Blame everything
on me".
"Whoopee!" the young exec thought, and happily went into the meeting where
the strategy worked perfectly. He was excused of all blame for the
department's failing results.
Many months later the young exec found himself in the same predicament as
his lack of true skills had again brought is abysmal results to the
attention of the board. But this time he didn't skip a beat. There was still
another envelope in this desk.
Shortly before the meeting he opened up the envelope. Inside was another
small slip of paper that said, simply, "Prepare two envelopes."
President Bush is trying Envelope One about 7 years too late, saying his
real troubles are the result of President Clinton's various policies.
Soon he'll have to start work on Envelope Two.
