Forest Grove, Portland

The final two workshops that are part of a national-award winning
historic preservation program will be presented Nov. 2 in Forest
Grove and Dec. 11 in Portland.

Titled "Wooden Beams and Railroad Ties: Preserving Oregon's Built
Environment," the workshop includes a history of Oregon's built
structures; information on historical research sources and
strategies; preservation assistance and heritage funding
opportunities, and other topics. The workshop is free and open to
the public.

In Forest Grove, the workshop will take place from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. at
the city auditorium, 1915 Main St.. Co-sponsors of the workshop
include the Friends of Historic Forest Grove, the City of Forest
Grove, and the Forest Grove Historic Landmarks Commission.

Kyle Jansson, coordinator of the Oregon Heritage Commission; Joy
Sears, the restoration specialist with the Oregon State Historic
Preservation Office; and consulting historian Richard Engeman are the
primary workshop instructors.

"The workshops are designed for anyone interested in heritage,
history and preservation," said Jansson. Attendees at workshops in
October in Baker City and Pendleton included historic property
owners, downtown development specialists, landmark commission
members, business owners, historical society board members and staff,
county government officials, college students, and others.

The workshop is part of a collaborative project of the Oregon
Heritage Commission, Oregon Historical Society, and the Oregon State
Historic Preservation Office. Earlier this year, the National
Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers awarded the
project two Excellence in Historic Preservation awards - one for
innovative educational programming and the other for building
successful partnerships. The project has been supported with funds
from the Oregon Cultural Trust.

Pre-registration is encouraged. For information and registration,
