I had always heard that it was to avoid the ladies getting hit by the
contents of chamber pots tossed out of upper story windows. The normal
routine was simply to toss the contents in to the streets to mingle with all
the other neat stuff left by the horses, etc., out there.
I'll take the mud splashes, thank you.
In Europe, men NEVER say "Ladies first" when going through a doorway into a
restaurant or other public place. It's the man's duty to lead the way and
make sure the passage is safe and clear for her.
Funny rules we have here - protect her from odious splashes but let her
clear the way into strange rooms.

Another good one.
Though I heard that in the old days the gentlemanly thing to do when walking
with a lady was to have her on the side next to the buildings and the man
next to the curb. That way any mud or water that splashed up from a car or
horse going too fast in the street would hit him and hopefully protect her
clothes.
But that the times and circumstances have now changed with the advent of
curbs and street gutters. Depending on the city and the circumstances the
thing to do is to have the lady on the curb side and the man next to the
buildings. This could be to be a buffer between her and any aggressive
panhandlers who tend to stay closer to the buildings or if you are in a very
crime ridden area to protect her from any muggers who might jump out from a
doorway or alley way.
Guys now days have it tough. What would a polite old geezer do if they were
walking in a high crime area with streets that are flooding because the
gutters are clogged with debris? They'd have to figure out what the rules
are on the spot or ask which side the lady prefers I guess.
