There were several op/ed pieces in Sunday's
Oregonian that caught my eye this weekend. One
recounted how, at the time of Bora Bora, when the
boarder area in Afghanistan was very much in
turbulence and Osama was on the run, we had
special troops in the area who were working hard
to track down Bin Laden. These very troops were
ordered to Iraq by George W Bush at just this
time to conduct the invasion, all but
guaranteeing that Bin Laden could nestle in and
find a nice safe spot to lurk. Speaking of
opportunities lost!
At the same time the entire world supported us
and was eager to help. Al Quita was on the wane.
And Bush, like Hitler with Russia, wanted more.
I have to say that I was wrong about the severity
of the Iraqi invasion. I speculated that invading
Iraq would be a mistake, but I failed to see
anything approaching the difficulties we face
today.
It is clear that Muslims are normally a fractured
group. Sunnis, Shiites, Persians, Kurds... if
ever there was a grouping of people where you
could employ "divide and conquer" strategies,
Muslims would be it.
Now, the "great uniter" has lived up to his
billing. Certainly he's torn our country apart,
but he has done the impossible and he needs full
credit: he has united the Muslim world.
They said it couldn't be done.
