Wow! Thank you Ed!
I listened carefully to that speech myself. I especially love this comment
by Mr Volk:
"...I think you reinforced a fear of a faceless, endless, evil threat that
may strike anywhere and any time. Yet, when you quoted FDR, you didn't use
his most important words: we have nothing to fear but fear itself."
Of course the President has been "selling fear" for five years now, with the
possible exception of moments of juvenile euphoria such as that episode on
the deck of a carrier when he said to the terrorists, "Bring 'em on!". Even
that is the bravado of a frightened man. He's convinced me he is
communicating his own fears whenever he speaks.
I didn't catch a connection at all with partisan campaigning at all beyond
what any President might say in an address to the nation. What I did see was
a constant, almost beseeching attempt to tie the war in Iraq to the "war on
terrorism". For me, it rang empty again and again as he tried to weave the
two things together. Certainly, terrorists are work in Iraq. Iraq is an
incredibly wealthy country laying wide open right now. It's a wonderful
target of opportunity for every gangster and would-be dictator. They are
raising up their faithful minions to do their stuff in Iraq at every
opportunity to destabilize it so they have another chance to grab some of
the riches. On top of that we have the civil war between the Sunnis and
Shiites.
It seems to me that America has adopted a new motto. I never especially
liked "Don't Tread on Me", but I now fear we've adopted something far less
worthy. Listening to the calls to bring our troops home, our new motto seems
to be, "If it's hard, let's quit!"
The candidates who get my vote will be those who I think have the best plans
for moving ahead in the spirit in which Mr Volk ended his letter:
"I urge you to join with the vast majority in the world who want a world
ruled by law and not by the barrel of a gun. We need our president to be the
leader for replacing division and war with unity and peace. Civilization is
protected by and built on law, not on war. Peace is possible, if you choose
peaceful means to achieve it."
Today I saw a comment in the news. I can't remember who it said it. The
comment was that Osama Bin Laden must be sitting back about now saying, "I
never believed we'd be this successful: that it could turn out this good!"
