As part of our "Great American Speech" series join the
Friends of the Forest Grove Library and the Forest
Grove City Library for a community program regarding
"Immigration in America."
The program will be held on April 24, 2007, 7 PM at
the Forest Grove Community Auditorium, 1915 Main
Street.
Winners of a student essay and art competition will be
announced at the event followed by a presentation on
the history of U.S. immigration, current immigration
issues and a community Town Hall discussion on the
topic of immigration in America. We encourage your
students to participate in the entire program.
This program was inspired by the poem that is on the
base of The Statue of Liberty:
THE NEW COLOSSUS
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame,
Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp! cries she
With silent lips. Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I life my lamp beside the golden door!
Emma Lazarus, New York City, 1883
