[Grovenet] Words for Government (and people) to Live By (WAS: Reputations)

While some thoughts on reputations drifted off to the 'unsinkable' Titanic
and the behavior of two of the key characters there were still fresh in my
mind, today while doing some research I ran across this observation on the
US Coast Guard pages:
"While no vessel can ever be regarded as unsinkable, it should be capable of
absorbing a number of errors and misfortunes before there is danger of
sinking."
Statement of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects. Seatrader Review,
December 1997, page 7

I think those are good words for government too.
And for individual citizens as well...
And, for a smile, I ran across this transcript of a distress call in
mid-ocean. A British ship was taking on water rapidly and made a two-way
radio call to a nearby vessel, saying, "...we are in a sinking condition and
the crew would greatly appreciate a lift to the nearest port..."
Leave it to the Brits to avoid an overstatement.
