[Grovenet] Minimum Wage

Me too, but I'm lucky. I don't have to survive on minimum wage. Our country
is "great" for the relatively wealthy - those of us with a roof over our
heads and food in a fridge.
Many, perhaps most, people trying to live on our minimum wage are actually
the growing class of "working homeless" who still have to sleep under a
bridge because their incomes can't provide them with minimum shelter and
food. I often see stories about how such people are obviously drug addicts.
The truth is that among them is a large and growing number of solid,
hard-working people with children who have little or no prospects for a good
life in the USA. Those people are figuratively standing out in the cold
looking in at the warm, cozy lifestyle the rest of us enjoy; a lifestyle in
which it pleases us to grumble about not having the money for a new car
instead of wondering how to stay dry and warm sleeping in the rough.
I keep hearing about how other nations, including much of western Europe and
Canada, are sliding into financial disaster because of their social
services. I've been hearing that for at least 30 years now and it hasn't
happened yet. Maybe it will, but for those decades at least the marginal
income people there were able to live better than they do here.
It is a "..great USA..." for those with the money to live here in comfort.

Here's an interesting little interactive about what the minimum wage is in
various countries around the world:
