It's the Chinese New Year, launching the auspicious year of the pig.
The London police took the opportunity to build a better relationship with
the Chinese community by donating hundreds of red balloons to the
celebration. Some people couldn't suppress a chuckle at the sight of
hundreds of red balloons floating in Trafalgar Square bearing a rather
suspicious-looking pig and the words "Metropolitan Police".
In an interesting footnote in the article, "...there are already many
children learning (Mandarin) in the UK, as the country prepares for China
rampant.
The Year of the Pig seems as good a moment to get to grips with Chinese
culture as any."
It's good to be able to communicate with those who supply many of our most
important goods in their own language...
