[Grovenet] Open Door Policy (WAS: Habla English?)

That's a valid point of view all right, Ed. Should we restrict immigration
at all? Should our doors be open to any and all who arrive on our "shores"
so to speak?

Note that my position against spending money to "accommodate"
non-English-speaking peoples except as needed to ensure they have access to
emergency services and other basics for any traveler visiting here does not
suggest that we cannot welcome all who want to come. It's just that those
who come and who cannot or will not learn English won't be able to fully
participate in our society as easily as those who do.

That was true when the Statue was erected too. For those who didn't learn
English, it fell to their children who learned English in school (because
there were *no* special classes in Iris, German, Russian, etc.) to be the
family members equipped to fully understand all that went on.

The reality is that most immigrants learned at least some English, enough to
get a job and get along, just as most immigrants do today.

So, Ed, is it your position that we should not restrict immigration?

The biggest argument I hear against the idea is the fear that it'd have a
huge deleterious effect on the standard of living among those who live here
now.

Do you think that's true?

If so, is it important?

If so, what would we do about it?

Not even a little bit. I still believe in the
inscription on the Statue of Liberty!

A large percentage of them are here illegally.
Much larger than our
  English speaking illegal population.
  Doesn't that bother you?
