[Grovenet] Habla English?

My gosh, David. What does Dr. King have to do with this? Martin Luther King
was an American, born and raised and killed here, for all the beauty of his
life and the shame of his death means to America.

Dr King was a great example of how important it is to know the language of
one's homeland. How effective do you think he would have been preaching in
some obscure African dialect?

This is about language, not race. This is about language, not ethnic
choices.

No one is suggesting that Spanish speaking people would not be able to
participate in "their country". That's Mexico! The question is whether we
make the USA look and act and sound like Mexico.

This is close to Ed's comments about immigration, I think. The reason many,
perhaps virtually all, of those folks want to come here is because they see
greater opportunity to provide for themselves and their families here than
in their homeland. If that inequity was addressed, the migration would
virtually stop.

I believe that if someone wants to immigrate, no matter the reason, they
should understand that they will live here with a significant handicap if
they fail to learn to read, write, and speak English well. I object to our
spending money trying to accommodate those folks as if they had a "right" to
expect that Spanish be used here as it was at home.

I've no objection to a business like the pizza parlors in Texas who accept
pesos as a choice to serve their clientele any more than I object to La
Grande market in Cornelius using English as a 'second language' inside their
store. I'm disappointed, but I don't object about having to go to Hank's or
Albertsons in Hillsboro to buy the foodstuffs I want that Safeway chooses
not to carry and which Hanks dropped when they became La Grande with its
specific cultural focus.

But I will always object to spending taxpayer dollars to provide
Spanish-speaking facilities with the sole exceptions of resources to help
immigrants learn English and a reasonable multi-lingual capability to render
assistance in emergencies.

When I consider those populations, one thing that I see is that a lot
of them share our inheritance. They are American residents who have
a portion of the American heritage and culture. I would hate to see
them marginalized, criminalized, victimized, or ignored because they
cannot speak for them self. I want them to be able to participate in
their country.

Monday we will commemorate a leader from the time when we were trying
to resolve our racial differences. We don't need to create new
divisions.

I have no desire to have the cultural divisions in this country that
Iraq suffers. I don't want the religious divisions Israel suffers.
I don't want the economic divisions that Mexico suffers either. They
are not doing those countries any good.
