If Immigration in America is a topic of interest to
you:
Heads up on a date to put on your calendar.
As part of The Great America Speech Series, The
Friends of the Forest Grove Library and The Forest
Grove Library in cooperation with the Forest Grove
School District will be having a program on
"Immigration in America" on Tuesday, 4/24/07, 7 PM in
the Community Auditorium.
The program will be based on the poem by Emma Lazarus:
The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
Emma Lazarus, 1883

Students in the Forest Grove School district are
invited to write an essay or create an art project
that expresses their opinion or feelings about
Immigration in America. The best works receive a
prize.
The program will consist of a reading of "The New
Colussus" , the winners will receive their prizes,
read their pieces and show their art work, after which
will follow a public discussion about immigration in
America and a reception.
If your child is interested in competing, please see
the information on entries below. We are still in the
planning stages so if any of the details change on
this, I will let folks on Grovenet know. Alana
