I use the full Acrobat program for creating pdfs, but I second Steve's suggestion.  PrimoPDF is a great alternative if all you need to do is create pdfs from any document type.  It is fast, accurate, free, and has no ads.  Go to www.primopdf.com for the free download.  I think you are limited in not being able to append pdf files to one another, but that's a minor point when you just need a free pdf writer.
