AIDS QUILT DISPLAY OPENS!

Pacific University is hosting a display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in
two locations from November 6 through December 2, 2007. Four 12 ft.
by 12 ft. blocks will hang in the Pacific University Library. A
single block of 8 panels will be on display at the new Health
Professions Campus in Hillsboro.

The AIDS Quilt began in 1987 as a memorial to those who died of AIDS.
The AIDS Quilt has grown to a 54-ton tapestry that includes more than
46,000 panels dedicated to more than 91,000 individuals. It is the
largest piece of community art in the world. It provides a creative
means for remembrance and healing, illustrates the enormity of the
AIDS pandemic, and assists in providing education and dialogue to
prevent HIV infection. Indeed, it motivates individuals to take
direct action to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The Pacific University display will feature four blocks. Each block
contains eight panels. Each panel features the name of a loved one
who has died of AIDS. The Hillsboro display will host one block. The
block requested a panel that has the name of a former Occupational
Therapist associated with several faculty members at the new Health
Professions Campus.

The two displays in Washington County are part of a goal to have
every piece of the AIDS Quilt on display December 1st for World AIDS
Day.

The AIDS Quilt display is being co-sponsored by the Pacific
University Center for Gender Equity, the Washington County Health
Department HIV Prevention Program, the Pacific University Library,
and the Forest Grove chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends
of Lesbians and Gays).
