Sponsored by the Center for Gender Equity

In October of 2006, Pacific alum Jill Reese traveled to India under
the auspices of the Center for Gender Equity to teach documentary
video production courses at Lady Doak College in Madurai, South
India. The courses were the first of their kind to be offered at the
women's college. Her students worked in small groups to create
documentaries representing social issues the young women face in
India's rapidly developing economy and effort to modernize. The
documentaries focus on such topics as the predominance of girls in
orphanages; the elderly who have no family to support them; a village
candy maker's struggle to preserve his age-old craft; and the
hazardous traffic conditions resulting from more vehicles on roads
created for traditional means of transportation; as well as the
contentious debate over young women's clothing and whether or not
women are the bearers of culture.
