[Grovenet] MACs for Christmas

My apologies, Geri. I didn't mean to imply that all of Chuck's customers
were careless computer users. I was observing that it's the careless people
who often provide the bulk of work and revenue.

Don't forget, you are just as vulnerable to a virus running a MAC as you are
a PC.

The belief has grown among MAC users that MACs don't get infected.
Absolutely not true.

Picture a herd of Gazelles on the African savanna. The Gazelles are personal
computers, so out of ten of them nine are IBM PCs and the remaining Gazelle
is a MAC.

A lion comes along looking for lunch. A stealthy and efficient hunter, he
grabs a handy Gazelle.

Was the Gazelle who became "lunch" a PC or a MAC Gazelle? The odds favor the
PC Gazelle by a large margin because there are so many of them and, to date,
lions have preferred PC Gazelles. That does not make the MAC Gazelle safe.
Given a virtually endless supply of hungry lions, and the fact that lions
are developing an ever-increasing taste for MAC Gazelles, it's certain the
MAC Gazelle will become "lunch" as well. The only question is "when?"

The first MAC Gazelle to become "lunch" will be the one who had grown
careless, drifting out to the greener grass on the edge of the herd
believing he's immune to lions because he's a MAC, but any MAC Gazelle is
fair game to any hungry lion.

Which virus attacked your system and how did it get past your defenses?

All I know, Chuck, is that no matter how vigilant
I was on keeping my Windows and my anti-virus
software up-to-date (I was even scoffed at by
others on how vigilant I was), my computer still
got infected a couple years ago -- and I was very
glad you were there to save it!!
