The Center for Gender Equity and the Feminist Studies Program are
pleased to invite you to celebrate Women’s History Month 2008 with a
public discussion of:
“PROFESSIONAL WOMEN, GOOD FAMILIES: RESPECTABLE FEMININITY AND THE
CULTURAL POLITICS OF A ‘NEW’ INDIA.”
Presenter: Smitha Radhakrishnan Ph.D. (Wellesley College)
Place: McGill Auditorium, Pacific University (go to
pacificu.edu for map)
Date: Wednesday, March 12, 2008
Time: 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
This discussion of professional “software” women in urban India
examines practices of respectable femininity and discourses of the
Indian family. It seeks to understand the changing and abiding aspects
of India’s “new” middle-class culture.
Legacies of colonial and nationalist constructs of the Indian home and
the middle-class women who protected that home continue to shape
everyday notions of national belonging, even as they are transformed
through individual negotiations.
Drawing from extensive interviews and ethnographic work, Dr.
Radhakrishnan analyzes the interplay of gender, class, and nation in
contemporary urban India.
Refreshments/Reception following the presentation.
Free and open to the public.
